A decision over where to site a new runway in the south east of England has been delayed for many years. However, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has confirmed that the waiting period could be over “shortly”.
In July 2015, an official commission has recommended Heathrow’s plans. However, it was delayed in December for further studies. It was then furthered delayed due to the UK’s vote to leave the European Union in June.
Three plans that are currently being taken into consideration include a third runway at Heathrow, a new runway at Gatwick and an extension of one of Heathrow’s existing runways.
Mr Grayling said: "They're all very well crafted proposals, they're all very interesting, they've all got great potential. We need to decide which is best for Britain.”
"You will get an announcement shortly. We haven't taken the decision yet.”
Plans of expanding the airport have been opposed by many politicians. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that making Heathrow any bigger is “basically unbelievable.” Education Secretary Justine Greening also opposes the plans saying expansion would mean extra noise pollution for her west London constituency.
