Christine Humphreys wrote letters to Santa 75 years ago asking for a box of crayons, a dolly's case, some scissors, and a hymn book. The letters, which were long forgotten, were left into the chimney of her old playroom to be received by Santa in the 1930s. She was just five years old.
The letters were found by chance by the new owner of the house, Julie Pugh, who said that the letters brought tears to her eyes.
“Seeing the request for such simple things like the hymn book and crayons made me think how materialistic we are today,” said Julia.
She bought the house together with her parents and turned it into a high-end wedding venue.
“The hall was pretty run down so we started work by sweeping all the chimneys.
“I’m so pleased we did as we found the wonderful letters to Father Christmas from the little girl who lived in the hall with her family.”
“Before we bought the hall I wanted to find out as much as I could about it, so contacted Mrs Churchill - who was the five-year-old Christine Humphreys.
“She has since become a firm friend of mine and is a wonderful character.”
Christine Churchill, now a widow, recalls writing letters to Santa but barely remembered their content.
She said: “I was flabbergasted to see the letters. I remember we were told to put them up the chimney in the playroom, I presume because it was not in use."
