Shane Meadows' revenge thriller, Dead Man's Shoes has scooped the top prize at the British Film Festival in Dinard, France.

Judges announced their unanimous decision to give the Hitchcock d'Or award to the film on Saturday.

The award is named after Alfred Hitchcock, the legendary director, who once lived in the Brittany town where the festival is held.

The British film tells the tale of two brothers who return to their hometown to get even with a gang of petty thugs who used to torture the younger brother.

The movie faced competition from a number of other films including, Bullet Boy, The Football Factory, Mothers and Daughters, My Summer of Love and Yasmin.

Accepting the award for his film, Mr Meadows, who is from Nottinghamshire, thanked an "incredible" audience at the ceremony.

"My goodness, what a shock," he told attendees.

The film was released in the UK on 1 October.

The 15th Dinard festival, which opened on Thursday with the new film from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, ends today.
