David Beckham may not have been selected to be part of Team GB, but it is likely that the famous sports star will make a special appearance at the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
Beckham’s current team, LA Galaxy, is offering the former England captain some time from his busy playing schedule to attend the said ceremony, which would cause him to miss at least one game. A senior official from LA Galaxy is quoted to have said, “It’s the very least we can do for David.”
Prior to this report, Beckham was expected to play a role in the Team GB football squad, but it was later confirmed that we would be omitted from the squad. Many fans and even colleagues in British football including Gary Lineker expressed their disappointment. Lineker, who is now a BBC presenter, was reported to have said that Beckham have “given so much” to British football and London 2012.
David’s close friends including James Corden of Gavin and Stacey and singer Ronan Keating said that the omission was “disrespectful” to Beckham, who is considered as one of the greatest ambassadors for British football.
It came as an even bigger surprise considering how Beckham helped win the games for London in 2005 and has exhibited a high level of involvement ever since. Just last month, he even flew to Cornwall to light the Olympic torch when it first arrived on UK soil.
The question, however, is whether David will take the opportunity to appear at the Olympic Games. Some reports have surfaced that he plans to skip the games altogether.
