Cruise's new lady

Tom Cruise showed off his new leading lady at the world premiere of summer blockbuster 'War of the Worlds' last night.

The Hollywood star was without new girlfriend Katie Holmes at the Japanese launch night and instead posed for pictures with his 11-year-old co-star Dakota Fanning, who plays his daughter in the movie.

Speaking later, the heartthrob actor, who has two adopted children from his marriage to second wife Nicole Kidman, said he used his own experiences as a father to inspire his role.

He said: "The idea was always about family. What would you do for your family, how far would you go? Can you protect your family?"

Tom, 42, was also joined by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg at the premiere.

Earlier this week, it was reported movie bosses were worried his public romance with 26-year-old Katie was taking the limelight away from the film.
