Get a brief rundown of the three test matches between New Zealand and England.
13:40 28 March 2013
March saw three first class Tests for England and New Zealand; the basic results follow but more information about the details of the five day match can be found online.
- First Test—(6-10 March): This was a five day match, though poor light and heavy rain. New Zealand had won the toss and put England into bat, but the match was called off after the tea interval, which essentially made it a four-day game rather than the five day game.Newcomer Steven Finn struck his first fifty and played a part in avoiding a loss. Instead New Zealand and England ended with a draw.
- Second Test—(14-18 March): The five-day match was affected by Cyclone Sandra effected and hammered the Auckland Basin Reserve with intermittent rains on the fourth day, and then worse weather on the fifth day. The fifth day was cancelled which left the second Test at a draw.
- Third Test—(22-26 March): After two draws for the first and second Test sets, the third Test was pivotal. After the first couple of days it appeared that New Zealand would walk away the winner, but Prior and Panesar managed to play out the 19 balls of the game to avoid a loss, though they settled for another draw.
The set of three Tests is bound to be frustrating for both the New Zealand and the England teams, but it is a testament to the level of skill for players on both teams that they were able to end every single match in a draw regardless of the detrimental effects of the weather on the playing conditions. These two teams will be ones to watch in the future.
