Congestion Clearing Technology in Oxford

Oxford set to become the first city in the UK to trial trailblazing technology that clears congested road for ambulances.

A new intelligent transport system designed to change traffic lights to allow ambulances to clear traffic is set to be trialled in Oxford. The Life First Emergency Traffic Control (LiFE) system, which was designed by Liverpool-based tech firm Red Ninja, is hoped to save more lives by effectively clearing congested roads during emergencies.

 

On February 1, the Oxfordshire County Council and South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) will meet with Red Ninja to discuss the details of the trial that is set to roll out later this year.

 

Project manager Lily Yang said: "The whole point of the technology is to help the emergency services get through bad traffic and the city has well known problems making it a perfect testing ground.

 

"I think this has come along at a great time for Oxford and it would be amazing to be first to do this and use all the attention that would generate to achieve even more."

 

She added: "As long as the willing is there, and from what I've seen from the county council it is, then we can address any specific challenges later on in the process. This is something that would make a real difference to people's lives."
