Colchester taxis may soon be fitted with CCTV surveillance equipment.

A six-week consultation on using CCTV cameras in Colchester taxis is set to begin with the end goal of requiring all new vehicles to have cameras fitted. Vehicles already registered as taxis and private hire will be given ample time to fit the cameras.

 

Although the move is expected to improve safety for both passengers and drivers, a major concern has arisen surrounding the cameras. The CCTV equipment that the council may approve could cost between £300 and £600, supplied and fitted.

 

Taxi drivers in the area said that they can get an alternative CCTV cameras fitted for as low as £30. Many drivers have also raised privacy issues and sound recording.
