Colchester Local Full Fibre Network Fund
Colchester Council’s cabinet set to approve Colchester Local Full Fibre Network Fund.
15:17 17 November 2019
Colchester Council’s cabinet is set to push forward with its proposals for its full fibre network fund. The first part of the scheme, which received £3.45million from the Department of Culture, Media, Sport and Digital, will involve the conversion of existing CCTV cameras into multi-purpose distribution nodes for the deployment of 5G, ultrafast broadband and digital CCTV.
The scheme will eventually see network infrastructure built at the council’s Northern Gateway development tol provide gigabit internet connectivity to every new home in town. The scheme will also provide fast internet speeds to areas like the Hythe and Greenstead.
A report about the scheme said: “Fewer than one per cent of connections in Colchester are pure-fibre capable of delivering gigabit speeds; this compares with 8 per cent across the UK.”
“The critical outcomes of this part of works will be making the connection of new customers far quicker, cheaper and easier than is currently the case; and providing the primary infrastructure for the separate, future modernisation of the CCTV system.”
