Cornerstone's application to build a new 20 metre high mast on a patch of grass approaching Iford Bridge on Christchurch Road, has been rejected by the local council following a flurry of objections from the members of the public who described the mast as an "incongruous blot" on the otherwise "nice area".
Planning officer Richard Cable agreed with protesters saying that the mast would appear as a “highly incongruous and intrusive” feature which would be “wholly detrimental” to the area.
He added: “Having regard to matters of siting and appearance the proposed facility would have a mast height that would project markedly above the existing tree line, and a layout and appearance that would be out of keeping with the appearance of other street furniture, adding to visual clutter.
“The proposed facility would appear as a highly incongruous and intrusive feature at this prominent location being obtrusively conspicuous to public view and within its context such as would be wholly detrimental to the soft landscape character and high-quality appearance of the area such as to significantly and adversely harmful to the character and appearance of the area.”
