Chichester set to cut the number of its district council-run CCTV cameras in half.
03:54 24 October 2023
The number of district council-run CCTV cameras in Chichester, West Sussex will be cut down from 65 to 27 cameras. The remaining cameras will be upgraded to a wireless system, the local council has confirmed.
Chichester District Council leader Adrian Moss said: "This is designed to improve the safety of our residents." He added that the new system would improve coverage in "most at risk".
The local government is investing a total of £115,000 to be spent on three new cameras, which will be installed in hotspot areas, and on the new wireless system, which is expected to provide better quality images.
A large number of the cameras being removed are located at council-owned car parks, which the review found were low value when it came to gathering evidence of crimes. Meanwhile, the three new cameras will be placed on Fishbourne Underpass, College Lane and Canal Basin.
