A new four-part series that will show Charlie Boorman’s time and experiences in South Africa will hit TV screens this autumn. The show will mark Boorman’s return to the Telly so his fans will learn more about his extraordinary experience exploring South Africa.
The show, which will be called Charley Boorman’s African Adventure, will air on Channel 5 and will be produced and directed by Russ Malkin.
The show will cover the epic 6,000-mile motorbike adventure Charlie used to explore Africa. He began the journey along the country’s southernmost coastline, then moved on to Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia. Charlie ended his African adventure with a trip down the Western coast of Africa, which saw him complete an entire circuit of the continental border. At the end of the trip, Charlie will have collected a group of fellow bikers.
The series, which aims to capture the journey as it is, will show the extreme sides of Africa. At the start of the journey, Charley had to live off parched lands and the remote Kalahari desert and had to navigate impassable roads to get to the peak of the Sani Pass. Towards the end, however, as Charley, along with Russ, moved southwards, they cruised effortlessly along Garden Route and came to a beautiful natural habitat that housed breathtaking animals such as rhinoceros and wild elephants.
Aside from the roads and the sights, Charley and Russ were also immersed in the dangers and wonders of Africa, its history, and the life and culture of the African people.
The adventure, which occurred over a period of six weeks, saw Charley cage diving with Great White Sharks, sharing a braai with the country’s natives, and celebrating Mandela Day.
After the trip, Charley described the change that his African experience has brought to his life: “I fell in love with South Africa the very first time I came here. The country is one of the most beautiful places on earth: rich in gastronomy, adventure opportunities and fantastic people.”
