CCTV to Catch Swindon Fly Tippers

Swindon council urged to install CCTV cameras in fly-tipping blackspots around the town.

Newly appointed Labour shadow-lead on communities and culture Councillor Adorabelle Shaikh is calling for the installation of CCTV cameras in fly-tipping blackspots around the town. 

 

The move follows a report showing that only 1per cent of fly-tippers were fined for dumping waste around Swindon throughout 2019 and 2020. 

 

“I’m determined to make some real difference in this new role and force the council to start taking the problem seriously,” she said.

 

“For too long, there hasn’t been effective action against people who fly-tip in Swindon.”

 

“The Government has made money available to communities through the Safer Streets fund, but it appears Swindon hasn’t used any of this money to fund the much-needed CCTV to catch fly-tippers and be able to prosecute them.

 

“I’m calling on the Conservative council and the conservative MPs to start fighting for Swindon to get its fair share, and to stop the scourge of fly-tipping around the town.”

 

Meanwhile, newly elected Eascott Labour councillor Marina Strinkovsky said that improving waste collection will also help resolve the issue. 

 

She said: “Over and above the CCTV and enforcement that is needed, we need to understand what systemic failure there is in the waste collection system in this area that causes the issue to be so prevalent here.

 

“Are there too few collections, not enough information about waste management services, unscrupulous landlords? People don’t go and collect rubbish from elsewhere to dump in in Eastcott and Central alleyways for the fun of it - there is clearly an unmet need.

 

“We need to find out what is driving the behaviour in order to be able to change it.”
