Taxis and private hire drivers are required to install CCTV cameras into their vehicles by April, the council's licensing committee has decided. The decision aims to protect both drivers and their passengers.
The installation of CCTV cameras has been introduced as a licensing condition in September 2020. However, the new rules were deferred due to the coronavirus outbreak. This is the second time that the council decided to postpone the implementation of the new rule.
In June 2018, the council originally proposed its new taxi and private hire policy and gave owners until April last year to get cameras fitted. This was put on hold following concerns from members of the trade about the cost of the equipment and installation.
During the latest council's licensing committee meeting, it was considered to put the new rule on hold again at least until June, once again over uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, it was decided in the end that it has been going on long enough.
