CCTV Cameras for East Yorkshire
All East Yorkshire taxis set to be fitted with CCTV cameras.
13:47 16 March 2022
All taxi drivers in East Yorkshire are now required to install CCTVs in their vehicles as part of a scheme that aims to improve safety for both drivers and passengers.
The local authority previously launched a voluntary CCTV scheme in 2016, which saw the cameras installed in 199 cabs. The scheme is now mandatory and will see the local council spend £160,000 to fit the equipment in the remaining third of taxis that do not yet have it.
A recent report revealed that in-taxi CCTV footage had been used 53 times in police and County Hall investigations. The footage had led to action being taken in assault cases, both from drivers and passengers. They were also used in theft and burglary cases as well as disproves false accusations made against drivers.
The local authority's licensing committee confirmed that new systems would alert passengers that they are being recorded that drivers and passengers will be able to turn on audio recording.
