Director Paul Feig has confirmed months of speculations that the upcoming remake of Ghostbusters will be a revision and that the major roles will be played by an all-female cast. Confirmed to head up the cast are Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.
The Ghostbusters reboot was originally planned to include the original cast members – Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. However, they were unable to recast Bill Murray. Meanwhile, director Reitman backed out in February when Ramis passed away.
Feig explained the decision to cast some of the funniest women in showbiz.
‘My favourite thing to do is work with funny women,’ he told Entertainment Weekly. ‘I was like, “what if it was an all female cast? If they were all women?”
'Suddenly, my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun.'
Responding to critics saying that it is all a gimmick. He said: ‘I just don’t understand why it’s ever an issue anymore,' he said. 'I’ve promoted both Bridesmaids and The Heat and myself and my cast are still hit constantly with the question, “Will this answer the question of whether women can be funny?”
‘…When people accuse it of being a gimmick, I go, "Why is a movie starring women considered a gimmick and a movie starring men is just a normal movie?"'
The director also stated: "In other news, #Ghostbusters will be hitting theaters July 22, 2016. Save the date!"
