Carlisle City Council has officially rejected Hutchison 3G Ltd's proposals to install a 15-metre high 5G mast on Bridge Street next to the Sainsbury service station.
5G is the next-generation mobile network that promises to deliver browsing and download speeds that are up to 20 times faster than the current 4G network.
Following the news, residents expressed their views that refusing permission would not be beneficial for the city, particularly with other towns and cities looking to invest in more infrastructure of this kind.
Liam Harrison said that the council's refusal will see Carlisle left behind as technology advances.
He said: So Ambleside has 5G but Carlisle is left behind as usual, typical of this place!
Another resident, Martin Harkins, echoed Liam's reaction saying: "Carlisle will left behind again."
Meanwhile, other residents said that the refusal to grant permission would hinder Carlisle's development going forward.
