Cardiff Council Smart Care at Home

Cardiff Council has piloted a scheme that aims to further help vulnerable people who receive care at home.

Cardiff Council is exploring the use of mainstream technology, which includes smart speakers like Amazon Echo, to improve care packages for people who receive care at home. The test, which is participated by three people, began at the start of 2018 and will run for a minimum of six months.

 

Smart gadgets, such as home speakers, can be used to remind individuals to take their medicines on time or if they are expecting visitors. They can also be used to control lighting and domestic appliances. 

 

Cabinet member for social care, health and wellbeing, Councillor Susan Elsmore, said: “The small pilot we’re running to test mainstream technology is designed to look at how a number of devices could be used to enhance care packages.

 

“Our thinking is that, alongside current levels of support provided through home visits for example, the technology could be used to complement this.

 

“There are a number of ways that mainstream technology could support care packages. For example, the devices may help to remind people when to take medication, or when to expect a visitor.

 

“Technology could also assist with controlling lighting and domestic appliances, and therefore act as a complementary means to further enhance someone’s independence at home.

 

“Individuals would still receive care and support from the council and our partners.”
