For the first time, Cambridge has made it to Huawei’s Top 10 UK Smart Cities Index Report, courtesy of the rapid progress of the innovative Smart Cambridge programme that was launched just two years ago. The city was included in the list because of its pioneering work using data and emerging technologies to find smart solutions to air quality, transport and other urban challenges.
Smart Cambridge, which is partially funded by The Greater Cambridge Partnership, has been commended for its collaborative work in cutting-edge research, establishing a LoRa network, setting up an intelligent City Platform (iCP) to collate real-time data, and supporting innovative Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
With further funding now available for additional projects, future exploitation of the platform to improve city services is expected to address housing, transport, health and energy improvements.
The city’s current projects include a super cycleway network and the expansion of bus services as well as park and ride sites. Plans are also being drawn on how to improve the management and use of on-street and workplace parking through smart technologies. The city’s Connecting Cambridgeshire programme aims to improve the region’s digital infrastructure with free public WiFi, better broadband access and wider mobile coverage.
