BT to Remove 5G Huawei technology

BT to remove Huawei technology from its phone networks amid fears that it could be used by the Chinese government to spy on people.

BT is the latest telco company to move away from Huawei amid fears that its technology could by used by the Chinese government to intercept phone messages and spy on people. 

 

BT has announced that Huawei’s infrastructure is no longer being used in its 3G and 4G services and that it would not be used in building its 5G network. 

 

Australia and New Zealand has previously confirmed that they have already stopped their telecom operators from using Huawei’s equipment in building their 5G network. The decision was made despite Huawei’s confirmation that Beijing has no influence over its operations. 

 

BT spokesman said: "In 2016, following the acquisition of EE, we began a process to remove Huawei equipment from the core of our 3G and 4G networks, as part of network architecture principles in place since 2006,"

 

"As a result, Huawei have not been included in vendor selection for our 5G core," he said.

 

"Huawei remains an important equipment provider outside the core network, and a valued innovation partner," he added.
