Brits to Lose Streaming Access in EU

Brits will no longer benefit from their digital content subscription when travelling to the EU after Brexit.

A new EU regulation, which has taken effect last week, will allow people who subscribe to video and music platform access the “home” version of their account while on a holiday in other EU countries.

Providers offering paid services, such as Spotify, Sky’s Now and Apple Music, are legally obligated to follow the new rules. However, those that provide free services will be able to choose whether to offer access overseas.

 

The new rules means that holidaymakers will be able to access local versions of subscriptions while visiting other countries in Europe.

 

The European Commission also informed copyright holders that UK citizens would be able to use their subscription while visiting EU countries until at least 29 March 2019.

 

But it added that "persons residing in the UK will no longer benefit from their digital content subscriptions when travelling to the EU" after Brexit.

 

Meanwhile, the UK government responded by saying: "The government is committed to securing the best deal for British consumers. Arrangements on portability would be subject to any negotiations."
