Britain's favourite sandwich is uncovered
11:26 15 May 2009
Cheese and pickle has been revealed as the nation's favourite sandwich filling.
According to a new poll by Aldi, a simple cheddar and pickle stuffing is the tastiest filler despite the huge variety of exotic snacks available on the shelves.
Voters in the poll tuned their noses up at pretentious paninis and riveting wraps and favoured the classic fillings throughout the list.
The mouth-watering BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomatoes) came in second place, followed by tuna and mayonnaise in third position.
So has the art of sandwich making gone out of fashion? Should we have stuck with the simplicities as created by the Earl of Sandwich in the 4th century?
Here are some celebrity chefs' recommendations - see if their creative tastes can tickle your taste buds.
Jamie Oliver:
Prawns with basil, mayonnaise and cress and a squeeze of lemon
Nigella Lawson:
Fried crunchy peanut butter and banana on toasted bread (as preferred by Elvis)
Gordon Ramsay:
Garlic and thyme infused steak, gherkins, capers and tomato triple decker
Marco Pierre White:
Microwaved bacon butty
Andrew Nutter:
Hot bacon, beans and Lancashire cheese sandwich
