Espionage thriller "The Bourne Supremacy" has continued the rich vein of box office form enjoyed by big name sequels this summer.

A sequel to 2002's sleeper hit "The Bourne Identity", the latest instalment sees Matt Damon reprise his role as the amnesia-ridden super spy Jason Bourne.

Directed by Briton Paul Greengrass of "Bloody Sunday" fame, "The Bourne Supremacy" is based on the novels of Robert Ludlum.

Like its predecessor, "The Bourne Supremacy" had great success in its opening weekend, clocking up $53.5 million in the US and Canada alone, according to box-office analysts Exhibitor Relations.

"Supremacy" pushed Will Smith's futuristic film "I, Robot" into second place, while Oscar winner Halle Berry proved her career may well need all her nine lives if the performance of "Batman" spin-off "Catwoman" is anything to go by.

Having been collectively mauled by critics and movie-going public alike, clocking in a paltry $17.2 million and third place in the box office in its opening weekend, the star of "Xmen 2" and "Monster's Ball" can now add "Catwoman" to a growing list of career turkeys including such disasters as "Swordfish".
