Scientists at Glyndŵr University have discovered a new polymer – a type of molecule – in rotting seafoods that could reduce split ends and boost hair volume.
Experts in Wrexham said that the polymer, which would be the main ingredient of a new “Head and Shellders” type shampoo, would be a natural alternative to the synthetic strain and is more environmentally-friendly.
Pete Williams, professor of polymer and colloid chemistry at Glyndwr University, said: “We’ve now reached the stage where we’ve developed a new polymer which is now being tested in personal and home care formulations.
“Chitosan has been around for a long time but we have developed a method of modifying it to give it enhanced properties.
“The prawn shells would normally be disposed of as waste so, ultimately, the aim of the project is to make the production of personal and home care products greener.”
The discovery is a result of a two-year research, which also paved the way for the discovery of eco-friendly products such as insect repellents.
