Black and White TV Licences in Glasgow

More than 7,000 households across the country are still watching TV in black and white.

Despite the popularity of smart TVs, smartphones and tablets, hundreds of household across the country still prefer watching TV in black and white, TV license chiefs have revealed.

 

According to the report, there are 105 black and white licences in Glasgow, 49 in Lanarkshire, and 41 in Edinburgh – each costing £49. However, the number is significantly lower compared in 2000 when there were 212,000 black and white licences in force. Experts say that the number will continue to decline as new technologies in the entertainment industry are introduced.

 

Fergus Reid, spokesperson for TV Licensing, said: “Over half of the UK’s TVs now connect to the internet, so it’s interesting that more than 400 households in Scotland still choose to watch their favourite shows on a black and white telly.

 

“Whether you watch EastEnders, Strictly or Question Time in black and white on a 50-year-old TV set or in colour on a tablet, you need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch or record programmes as they are broadcast.

 

“You also need to be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer, on any device.”
