Armed police stormed the US home of pop star Miley Cyrus after receiving an emergency call reporting an armed hostage situation.
The Los Angeles Police and rescue crews surrounded the star’s house in Hollywood last Wednesday. Helicopters were also called in to circle the property.
Soon afterwards, however, it was discovered that there was no one in the property.
Police now believe that the incident may be part of a trend of prank calls. They dubbed this trend ‘swatting’, which refers to when an anonymous call is made to emergency personnel, causing police to storm an innocent person’s home.
The police told media that they have been experiencing a rise in such incidents lately, despite the fact that making false 911 calls is a crime in California.
An investigation is being conducted in order to track the caller, who, if found, will face possible jail time of up to one year.
Miley, who, at 19, is ranked at number 13 on Forbes’ Celebrity 100, was not in the vicinity when the incident happened. The pop star, who gained popularity when she was cast as Miley Stewart in Disney’s show Hannah Montana, is safe.
