A study conducted by research company Kantar Worldpanel has found that more and more Brits are going “flexitarian” to become healthier. Flexitarians eat meat only occasionally often saving it as a treat when they go out to restaurants or for the weekend. The latest figures, which also show that the number of full-time vegetarians is at 4.6per cent of the population, were presented at the National Farmers Union (NFU) conference in Birmingham.
Nathan Ward, business unit director of Kantar Worldpanel, said: ‘The way people eat has changed. It’s no longer about cutting calories, it’s about eating the right things and the right portions.
‘They do still eat meat, but they are looking for more of a balance.’
The research has concluded that meat-free evening meals make up 35.3per cent at the end of the year, which means that one in six people eats meat fewer than three times a week.
Flexitarianism appears to be more appealing to the younger generation and is being driven by women. The movement comes after high consumption of red meat has been linked to bowel cancer.
