10:06 13 October 2010
Contestant Raleigh Adlington has revealed he quit the show after his brother was injured in Afghanistan.
The 23-year-old was about to start the second task in the BBC One series when producers told him about his brother Captian Ed Addington's injury.
He was hit by a roadside bomb and suffered a collapsed lung, brain haemorrhage and multiple fractures.
Speaking about the incident, economics and politics graduate, Raleigh, said that there was “never any question” of remaining in the reality show.
“At the start of the second task, I was contacted by the producer of the programme who told me that my mother was on the emergency number and I immediately feared the worst.
“My immediate reaction on hearing the news was to be with my family so I did not discuss the incident with the other apprentices.
“He was lucky to be alive.”
He also revealed that Lord Sugar telephoned him to make sure that his brother and family were okay.
Viewers will not see Addington leave in tonightÂ’s episode. The remaining contestants are told that his absence is due to a family emergency.
