Apple Watch VoIP?
Certain limitations may mean that Apple Watch Series 3 could do VoIP instead of direct phone calls.

KGI Securities analysts Ming-Chi Kuo seems to suggest that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 3 might support VoIP instead of traditional phone calls due to the lack of space for a proper SIM slot. He added that although voice calling is feasible, the "user experience of data transmission" must still be worked upon.
Kuo added that enabling VoIP and scrapping 3G connectivity all together will simplify negotiations between mobile operators as well as the design of the internal antenna. He rounds up his predictions by saying that Apple has no intentions of developing an Android app for the Watch and that there will be no 'obvious change' in the current form factor.
It has been confirmed that the latest series of Apple Watch are LTE enabled, which leads to speculations that it may no longer require to be paired with an iPhone for traditional voice calls. Fortunately, there is word on the street that all major US carriers will support the LTE Apple Watch.
