Anti-Speeding Technology for Cornwall

Anti-speeding technology may be used in Cornwall to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries.

Recent statistics have shown that the number of people killed or seriously injured on Cornwall’s roads have increased by 34per cent from 2013 to 2017. Speeding is one of the contributing factors for road collisions between 2015 and 2017.

 

The increasing number of deaths and injuries has led to calls for new anti-speeding technology. Cornwall Council is now working with the police and Highways England to review the Cornwall Road Casualty Reduction Strategy and create a new plan of action.

 

Meanwhile, the EU has approved new rules requiring all vehicles old in Europe from 2022 to be equipped with intelligent speed assistance (ISA) and advanced emergency braking. The system, which will apply in the UK despite Brexit, could help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 and cut road deaths to zero by 2050.
