French research lab Leti has announced the 5G Champion project intended “to deliver the world’s first fully integrated and operational 5G prototype in conjunction with the 2018 Winter Olympics.”
The European and South Korean project is participated by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), SK Telecom, Clever Logic, Seoul National University, Dankook University, Hanyang University, SMRT, Mobigen, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, and HFR.
Leti telecoms strategy director Emilio Calvanese Strinati said: “Showcasing key enabling technologies for a proof-of-concept environment at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea, will allow maximum visibility for the available technology two years ahead of the official launch of 5G in 2020,
“It will be the first time ever that terrestrial wireless communication, including enablers such as mmWave access, will be combined with satellite communication. This will form a 5G network with multi-radio-access technologies [multi-RAT] that is optimised to serve user equipment.”
He added that there will be focus on improving latency in the millisecond range, enabling cost-effective network management, and enhancing quality of service in high-speed mobility conditions, among others.
