Julia Roberts has become the newest A-list Hollywood celebrity to appear on the small screen as Amazon launches a new series. According to reports, the Pretty Woman actress will make £450,000 per half-hour episode of the Homecoming series. Meanwhile, YouTube also makes it biggest foray into UK programming, launching sci-fi series Origin, which features Natalia Tena and Tom Felton and directed by Resident Evil and Event Horizon director, Paul WS Anderson.
Apart from Roberts, other A-list Hollywood stars who have joined the streaming bandwagon are Drew Barrymore, who appeared on NetFlix Zombie comedy and Winona Ryder, who appears in the supernatural series Stranger Things. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston are set to appear in a new Apple drama based on a CNN journalist’s book called Top of the Morning.
More Hollywood stars are expected to appear in big budget series starting next year as Netflix plans to spend about $12billion on its upcoming shows. Meanwhile, Amazon will spend $5bn, HBO $2bn and Apple more than $1bn.
Laurimore, who has worked for the global agency William Morris, said: “The streamers create a hugely exciting opportunity for talent. With the ability they create for global reach, talent know they can find an audience wherever they are.
