A Mammoth Finding

A 12-year-old has found what is thought to be a fossilised mammoth tusk that is at least 4,500 years old.

12-year-old Archie Wood is over the moon after finding what is thought to be a 4,500-year-old fossilised mammoth tusk on the beach. The boy was with his father at Bexhill beach in East Sussex last Saturday when they made the discovery.

 

Grandad Neil Wood, 69, said: "He was with his father at the beach. he got a metal detector for Christmas and had taken it along.

 

"But he saw something sticking out of the sand and went over to it. He told me his heart was beating.

 

"He was so excited, he couldn't believe what he was digging up.

 

"When he started digging he pulled out this enormous tusk .

 

"He showed his dad who thought it might be wood and told Archie to throw it away! But they looked again and thought it is something special."

 

Mr Wood added: "He was ecstatic. He couldn't rush home quick enough to show it to us.

 

"Everybody that's seen it has gone 'wow!' If you feel it it's amazing, it's very heavy. We haven't weighed it but I reckon its three or four pounds.

 

"It is over 18 inches long, and that's with the curve.
