Projects in Sunderland, Liverpool, Preston, Manchester, Brighton and Suffolk that aim to explore how 5G technology can improve UK industries will receive a share of £30million in funding, it has been confirmed.
The projects include 5G-powered remote music festivals trials at the Brighton Dome, AI-controlled traffic lights in Manchester, and 5G-powered robotic assembly processes in Preston. The scheme will also see South Korean firm Samsung participate in a UK-based 5G trial project for the first time as BT sport will look into how 5G can transform live sport viewing through virtual reality using Samsung kit.
Matt Warman, Minister for Digital Infrastructure, said: "We are helping innovative thinkers across Britain to use their creativity to harness the power of 5G and boost economic productivity, cut pollution and congestion, and develop the next generation of entertainment."
"The new funding we are announcing today will help us pioneer ways to seize the opportunities of 5G and bring tangible benefits for consumers and businesses across the country."
