5G Test on Trans Pennine Railway.
UK to test 5G connectivity on Trans Pennine Railway.
21:37 23 August 2018
The UK Government is encouraging technology firms to participate in a 5G trial on Trans Pennine Railway in a bid to improve internet connectivity of railways. The Trans Pennine Initiative (TPI) will evaluate associated processes and costs to offer the 5G connectivity.
Participating firms will be allowed to deploy their trial radio equipment on the TPI pilot route, which is between Leeds and Manchester, without investing in trackside infrastructure. This will allow them to exhibit the feasibility of their products in a live environment and utilise the new 5G facility in Melton Mowbray free of charge.
Minister for Digital Margot James said: “The importance of fast, reliable and uninterrupted connectivity on our rail network is only going to increase.
“Projects like the Trans Pennine Initiative will be instrumental in delivering this for passengers, and are all part of our commitment to make the UK a world leader in 5G.”
