5G Meets AI at Show

AI and 5G take centre stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry, has become the centre stage for the unveiling of innovative gadgets and technology that industry leaders describe as ‘game-changers.’

 

Samsung launched its Galaxy 9 featuring a neural image processing chipset that may set it apart from the ones launched by Google and Huawei. The AI-powered chipsets work by turning phones into imaging machines without using the phone’s core processor or connectivity.

 

Miguel Alvarez, director of technology services at AnalogFolk, said: "It moves the world away from AI via cloud computing and into AI via our mobile," 

 

This new technology will allow virtual reality (VR), image recognition and augmented reality to run more smoothly. It can also improve security as it will no longer rely on cloud for data storage.

 

Meanwhile, Qualcomm launched its Snapdragon 700 processors designed to turn even lower-priced smartphones into AI-powered devices. Huawei, on the other hand, launched a 5G chipset while ZTE promised to launch 5G smartphones by the end of the year.

 

Samsung also announced that it had received the needed approval from US FCC to allow commercial venues to broadcast WiFi over 5G.
