5G Masts Heading to Derbyshire

5G phone masts earmarked for Alvaston, Normanton and Chaddesden in Derby.

Vodafone and Telefonica, Three and EE are set to submit an application to the Derby City Council for their respective 5G phone masts. The masts could be built on the streets in Chaddesden, Normanton, Alvaston and Sunny Hill. 

 

5G is the next-generation mobile network. Often described as the latest "transformational technology", it is designed to cope with the increasing mobile internet demand. However, many people have claimed that the technology poses a threat to human health and the environment with a small number of conspiracy theorists claiming that it is the cause of the coronavirus pandemic. Experts have since dismissed such claims saying that 5G has been proven safe for both humans and wildlife. 

 

Three UK has proposed to construct a 20 metre-high monopole and accompanying base station. The firm said that they are in the process of upgrading all of their internet coverage across the country and building a mast in the area is a must for them to deliver 5G coverage in surrounding locations. 

 

Meanwhile, EE and Three have cherry-picked a location in Alvaston for the construction of a 5G mast. The site is situated just around the corner from an existing phone mast providing 4G coverage to the local area.
