Warrington Council has approved the installation of a new 5G mast during their virtual development management committee meeting on Wednesday. The location for the new mast is the council-owned open central reservation grassed strip on the A57 Sankey Way close to the roundabout junction with Penketh Road.
The 5G mast, which will be shared between applicants Hutchinson 3G and EE, will be 5.3metre higher than the existing mast, and will feature coloured green equipment cabinets, which are also larger in size.
Cllr Judith Wheeler said that the scheme would present a quite 'substantial increase in size' on the present structure.
"It's quite interesting that of 300 consultees, there were two questions, comments - which is a far cry from 10 years ago when the mention of a phone mast provoked mass hysteria.
"I am happy with the condition of the green colouring."
Cllr Peter Carey added: "I'm aware of the fact that over 300 people have been consulted and even though this isn't a thing of beauty only people sought to make representation, so given the modern way of working with IT, I accept it's a necessary evil."
