A pilot £1.3million ‘Smart Place’ programme could bring 5G technology to Lansdown as early as next year. The plans include installing networks along St Paul’s Road and parts of Christchurch Road to bring the service to homes and businesses. It also involves the provision of extensive IT networks to support high tech systems and organisations.
A report published ahead of the meeting says: "It is predicted that there is significant social, environmental, economic and financial value in a ‘Smart Place’ approach to delivering services."
"This provides an opportunity to conduct initial proof of concept Smart Place use trials and to develop new Smart Place applications and services."
The report added that trials could cover major events across the conurbation, including the Christmas Tree Wonderland and Bournemouth Air Festival.
In response to concerns about the potential health effects of 5G, the report also added that the council will “continuously monitor” radiation levels to ensure they were within guidance set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.
