Running a restaurant is not for the faint of heart: between the hectic schedule of a commercial kitchen, the many regulations you are required to follow and the inevitable share of difficult customers you face, there're a lot of things to juggle. When staff are run off their feet, it is unfortunately easy for safety to become compromised. Here are five pieces of technology that will make your restaurant safer for both customers and staff.
1. A cold room
If your restaurant is on the slightly smaller side, you might not think that you need a cold room. However, a cold room will provide much more precise temperature control than a fridge, which will help you guarantee the safety of all your foods, as vegetables will have very different temperature requirements than, for example, meat or fish. Cold room installers can even fit your restaurant with modular cold rooms, with different temperatures in different areas.
2. UV lamps
Normally, we associate the term 'ultraviolet light' with something negative – after all, that’s what we are trying to protect ourselves from when we put sunscreen on. However, ultraviolet light can also have its benefits, which include its disinfecting power. Installing UV lamps in your kitchen hoods will help to break down the grease molecules in the exhaust air stream, which will reduce the risk of flue fires and prevent secondary pollution from the oil fumes. This system is also convenient because its cleaning process runs in parallel with the exhaust system, which means that you don’t need to set aside a time to clean it when the kitchen is not in operation.
3. A digital kitchen management system
If you are thinking of installing a digital kitchen management system in your restaurant, the chances are that what attracted you to this product has more to do with efficiency than with safety. However, replacing the traditional notepad and pen used to take orders with a digital system has the added benefit of reducing germ transmission, as digital devices such as tablets and smartphones are far easier to clean than a notepad.
4. A humidity control system
Maintaining a low level of humidity in your restaurant will have the double benefit of making the space more pleasant for your customers and staff and of reducing the transmission of airborne pathogens. Additionally, reducing the humidity level in your kitchen will reduce the chances of food spoilage. There are many kinds of humidity controllers for you to choose from, both static and mobile ones.
5. Temperature sensors
Finally, temperature sensors are becoming an increasingly common sight in restaurant kitchens. These wireless devices can be placed in your fridge, freezer or cold room and will alert you when the temperature reaches a custom-set threshold – via beeping or even through a text message or an email. By finding out immediately that your fridge, freezer or cold room has developed a fault, you can get the problem remedied quickly and avoid lots of food getting spoiled and wasted.
