5 Recent Technology Advancements
Life as we know it continues to advance at an epic rate.
13:59 24 February 2023
Whether you’re considering the evolution of humans, the breakthroughs of science, or the advancement of technology, there’s no denying that we’re moving forward, and we’re doing it quickly. There are a number of fascinating developments that have occurred throughout history, with the obvious being things like the telephone, the lightbulb - even DNA testing. But what do you think the most exciting advancements have been in the past fifty or sixty years?
Things have progressed so far that it’s sometimes hard to remember what life used to be like. For the younger readers, there was a time when you had to choose between making a phone call or using the internet - really. Now, we have literally everything we need in our pockets. Your smartphone acts as a hub for everything you need to access - navigation, web browsers, social media, even finding the best online casino payouts has never been easier, thanks to the host of online casinos now offering mobile and app services. Here are 5 quite recent advancements that we consider to be pivotal to how we live today.
- The Internet
Starting with the obvious - where would we be without the internet? For a start, you’re reading this on the internet. The internet serves as the jumping off point for most everything that follows - without the internet we would not have social media, we wouldn’t have online casinos, we wouldn’t have streaming platforms, online shopping, online maps, online booking systems for hotels and restaurants - basically anything with the word ‘online’ in front of it wouldn’t exist - and a lot of other things too.
- Social Media
Whilst many people consider social media to be the demise of humanity (and really, who can blame those people?) there are definite benefits. What started out as a way to connect with friends has evolved over the years to now provide a lifeline for many lonely or isolated people. Along with connecting to current friends, you can reconnect with old friends, and even keep up to date with your favourite celebrities. Social media isn’t for everyone, and it certainly has its drawbacks, but it also offers a community for many people - changing lives.
- Digital Camera
It seems weird to include something in the list that isn’t used as much by consumers in its original state anymore, but the digital camera was an astonishing achievement that still exists today - in many deceptive forms. By creating a digital camera, the route was paved for you to now be able to take a picture of your new haircut and send it to your friends with your smartphone. You might not be using the kind of camera you think of when I say, ‘digital camera’, but you are still using a digital camera.
- Smartphones and Computers
Where would we be without smartphones? It’s hard to imagine how successful many of the other things on this list would be without a smartphone. Of course, many of these things, like the internet, digital cameras, and even social media, existed before the smartphone, but the smartphone helped to push a lot of these things into being part of everyday life. Rather than waiting until you got home from work to log onto a computer and open Facebook, you can check it on your phone, no matter where you are. Speaking of computers, at this point we have to mention those - laptops, tablets, even the smartphone we just described - they all stemmed from the personal computer.
- Streaming Services
A bit of a strange one to include, but definitely worthy in our opinion. Streaming services for music, film, and television have reshaped the ways in which we consume entertainment. We probably all remember when we had 4 television channels and no choice but to watch whatever was on but look how different things are now. Literally thousands of series and films are at our disposal, ready to be downloaded and watched - along with over 100 million songs. With streaming services, you’re never short of entertainment options.
Sure, these five things might not be what most people regard as the ‘most important’ advancements in history - or even in the more recent past. They have; however, each shaped the world around us and our experiences as we know them today, and we can’t wait to see what comes in the next fifty years.
