What does it look Like to age gracefully?
11:51 23 March 2021
Aging isn’t for the weak at heart. It happens to the best of us, but only those of us who are prepared to embrace it will truly find peace amid the process. Are you one of them?
What is Aging?
Aging seems unnatural, simply because we’re built with a desire to live and be healthy. But in reality, aging is a natural part of the biological process. And how you deal with aging will, to a large extent, influence your physical and emotional health.
“Aging is associated with changes in dynamic biological, physiological, environmental, psychological, behavioral, and social processes,” National Institute on Aging explains. “Some age-related changes are benign, such as graying hair. Others result in declines in function of the senses and activities of daily life and increased susceptibility to and frequency of disease, frailty, or disability.”
Perhaps the best way to think of aging is in categories. There are three basic measurements of age:
- Chronological age. This number is purely based on the number of years you’ve been alive. In reality, chronological age has very little impact on anything – it’s merely a predictor. (It’s why some 50-year-old people can look like they’re 75, while some 75-year-olds look 50.)
- Biological age. This refers to the changes that occur in the body as you age. So as your chronological age increases, your biological age is more likely to translate into physical health issues and deterioration.
- Psychological age. Your psychological age refers to your mental health. In many cases, biological age and psychological age do not move in tandem. Some people lose their minds before they lose their bodies, or vice versa.
When you understand the different types of aging, it becomes clear that aging is more than just a number. It’s also overwhelmingly evident that you have some influence in how you approach aging, both physically and emotionally.
How to Age With Grace
To age gracefully is to accept that which you cannot control and to confidently embrace the new opportunities that you have in front of you. It means not fighting aging, but doing everything you can to continually put forth your best image. It’s about being a blessing to those around you, rather than a burden.
Here are some helpful tips that will allow you to age with grace:
- Reduce Stress
The best thing you can do for your life is reduce stress. Once you remove the bulk of the stress from your life, aging can actually become enjoyable. You’ll also find that your stress-free existence slows the aging process.
In addition to removing obvious stress factors, you should embrace healthy habits like drinking plenty of water, exercising daily, and getting adequate sleep.
- Prioritize Your Appearance
Aging with grace doesn’t mean “letting yourself go.” In fact, it means the opposite. It’s about prioritizing your physical appearance (while still understanding that you aren’t going to look like you did 30 years ago).
If you’re balding, try using laser cap therapy to increase blood flow, promote cell absorption, and accelerate protein synthesis. If wrinkles are making you look older than you are, try a treatment like dermabrasion.
- Avoid Complaining
Most people take to complaining as they age. Between physical ailments and increased cynicism, it’s easy to resort to lamenting circumstances and calling out everything that’s wrong in your life. But if you want to age with grace, you should avoid complaining and instead live a life of contentment. Not only will people enjoy being around you more, but you’ll come across as a more confident person.
- Share Your Wisdom
You might not feel like you have much wisdom, but you do. And one of the core aspects of aging is a willingness to impart this wisdom on others. You have to be wise and diplomatic with how you do it, but withholding wisdom does everyone a disservice. (It also boosts your confidence, which helps you age with even more grace.)
Put Your Best Foot Forward
Aging isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be a burden. When you learn to embrace aging with self-confidence and assurance, you become a blessing to those around you – a beacon of hope in a world where people try to cling to things they can’t control. Use these tips to age like you mean it!
