The great American road trip is something everyone dreams of. But the long drives can feel tedious, and with only limited entertainment options, you’ll need to find ways to pass the time.
We’ll cover four road trip hacks to make your travels a little more fun!
Bring a Portable Power Station
Whether riding a small car or driving a 40-foot diesel RV, you can never have too many power options readily available. Even if you’re going to be plugged into the grid at a campsite, having a backup power source can be invaluable.
Investing in a portable power station can yield all types of benefits. Think of it like a big battery bank that can power almost anything. For example, it can charge your phones, laptops, and even the fridge. If it’s extremely hot outside, you can bring a portable air conditioner and have it powered by your portable power station. The last thing you want is a heat stroke, especially if you’re going through a dry desert.
Play Road Trip Games
Road trips can be long and arduous, making you feel bored as you trek through long terrains of mountains and fields. Having road games to play in the car keeps you and your passengers entertained for hours. There is a wide array of games themed around memory, music, movies, and others. Here are several games to get you started:
- Two Truths and a Lie: Come up with two true statements and one lie. Then everyone has to guess which statement of the three is a lie.
- I Spy: This game involves someone spotting something outside the car and saying, “ I spy with my little eye something beginning with.” Then see if anyone can guess it correctly.
- Name the Animal Game: Start by naming an animal, such as a bear, raccoon, tiger, etc. Then everyone will take turns naming a different animal that starts with the last letter of the previous animal.
- Twenty Questions: Think of a person, thing, or place. Examples include “New York,” “Batman,” and “Tacos.” Everyone else must ask a yes or no question to try to come up with the answer. However, they can’t ask for more than 20 questions. The first to guess it correctly wins.
Stop at Interesting Attractions
One way to make your road trip fun is to stop by interesting attractions as you go. Depending on where you’re going, there are likely plenty of historical sites worth checking out. You can find them on print-off brochures or online.
National parks are an excellent way to escape the city life's hustle and bustle. After being cramped in your car for hours, it’s nice to be in front of breathtaking and scenic views. A quick hike will get your blood pumping, which is vital for your health.
Bring a Real Physical Map and a Big Sharpie
Google or Apple Maps is great for driving directions, but tracking your progress on a printed-out atlas is way more fun. Bring a big sharpie and track your route along the map.
There are, of course, other advantages to paper maps. For example, it’ll be reliable even when your phone loses signal or power. Not to mention, it improves your spatial awareness, meaning you’ll be more aware of your surroundings while traveling.
