3 Pro Tips to Create The Right Keyword Strategy
What is the first step in a successful SEO strategy?
11:02 11 March 2020
No, it’s not checking your rankings obsessively three times a day. It’s also not paying a bunch of money to show up as the first ad on Google in hopes that it will trickle down and get you more organic impressions.
The first step of any successful SEO campaign is doing a proper keyword strategy. In this post, we give you some of the top principles of how to structure your keyword strategy for success.
1. Check what already works
First things first. You might already be ranking well for some keywords so get an SEO tool like Ahrefs or Moz and see which keywords you are currently ranking for. This is a great way to save yourself time and effort. It’s much easier to boost a piece of content that’s already on the first or second page of Google than to have to start from scratch.
When you see something that is already ranking come up with some ideas for creating something similar. The more high-ranking pages you have (even if they are for totally different keywords) Google will make a note of that and start ranking your entire site better. Remember everything is a signal to Google’s algorithm and though we don’t know the exact impact we can still focus on replicating the success we already have.
2. Do some competitor research
Take a look at some of your top competitors and see which keywords they are ranking for. You can do a lot with this tactic. You can optimize and A/B test your title tags, meta descriptions, URL structure and the product/service descriptions on the actual page. You can also get some good content ideas by seeing what your competitors are already doing.
3. Focus on the long-tail keywords
One mistake that marketers often do is that they set their bar too high and shoot for the short-tail keywords first. This is the wrong strategy because those shorter keywords are the most competitive and the harder to rank for. In fact, you should do the complete opposite.
You should take a short-tail keyword and come up with 10-20 related long-tail keywords. Then, look at the top-ranking pages for each one and see how you could optimize your existing pages or write new content that would rank well.
Bonus Tip: One of the most misunderstood tactics is called creating pillar content, and this is something that even an SEO agency that offers the best SEO services in London won’t be able to do for you. Pillar content is a comprehensive piece of content about a specific topic or subtopic. Write a comprehensive post on a topic and then repurpose some of its sections into smaller blog posts linking back to the long one you wrote. These internal links will signal to Google that your pillar content is important and you will start ranking better for one or several of the long-tail keywords you used.
Recap
Now that you know our three tips go out there and optimize your site, create some new content and focus on the long-tail keywords. If you make your SEO strategy about the right keywords your rankings will soar.
