Researchers recently revealed that having three glasses of wine every week could reduce a person’s chance of developing rheumatoid arthritis by up to 52%. The research was conducted through a study involving women, who are known to make up the majority of the 400,000 sufferers of the condition in Britain.
Arthritis is very common among women aged between 40 and 70. It is characterized by pain as well as by swelling in the hands, wrists, and feet. This can make doing regular tasks nearly impossible and can therefore get in the way of a person’s normal life. Worse yet, the illness is caused by the body itself, particularly the immune system; instead of fighting infection, the immune system begins to attack the cells that line the joints.
Doctors are currently unable to come up with a cure for the illness, and treatment mostly focuses on pain alleviation.
The study showed, however, that thanks to alcohol’s ability to lower the body’s immune response, it can help reduce a woman’s chances of developing the illness.
The study used three medium-sized glasses of wine or equal amounts of other beers or spirits. However, the study did not show whether drinking more wine could reduce the risk by a higher percentage.
