The biggest night in film has announced which movies are vying for the prizes. Here is the 2014 Oscar nominations list.
By Dave Lancaster |17:12 16 January 2014
The Oscar nominations are out and 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Gravity are leading the field.
American Hustle has the distinction of having its core cast nominated in every acting category: Christian Bale for Best Actor, Amy Adams for Best Actress, Bradley Cooper for Best Supporting Actor and Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress. Of these, Lawrence, is considered a frontrunner.
Britain's own Steve Coogan finds himself nominated for two Oscars for writing and producing Philomena. The film's main star Judi Dench is also up for Best Actress, but she'll have to compete against the likes of Gravity's Sandra Bullock and Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett as well as awards season evergreen Meryl Streep for August: Osage County.
Shut out of the Best Actor race were Hollywood legends Tom Hanks and Robert Redford - both have been racking up awards for their seafaring survival dramas Captain Phillips and All is Lost.
Here are the leaders of the field:
American Hustle - 10
Gravity - 10
12 Years a Slave - 9
Captain Phillips - 6
Dallas Buyers Club - 6
Nebraska - 6
