To get a good idea of what life is like in Bali, you should visit Kuta. With a busy nightlife, a glorious promenade, and a range of stunning beaches, it ticks most boxes for a relaxing and exhilarating trip. There are plenty of places in Kuta to experience that may make you fall in love with the destination and we have chosen just five here. For more information on where to stay in Kuta, we have a resource for that too as there are several places to choose from.
Kuta is a great place to visit if you enjoy a party and some relaxation too, as it’s the best place to cover both activities in Bali. It happens to be close to the airport and features some of Bali’s best bars and clubs, as well as some cultural spots. That does mean it tends to be full of tourists and backpackers so you should be in good company. The beaches are stunning if you prefer to relax though try not to swim in them as you may be going home with an infection.

Kuta Night Market
From 6pm to midnight, Kuta Night Market is the ideal place to spend the evening as there is so much to experience. You may find some trinkets to take home or some street food that you have been aching to try. There should also be some relatively cheap perfumes and clothes on offer if you want to grab a bargain. Try not to forget that part of the fun of the market is haggling down the price so be prepared.
Uluwatu Temple
In the South Kuta district, around 22km from downtown is Pura Luhur Uluwatu. This is one of the most popular and revered temples in all of Bali so treat it with the respect it deserves. As one of the best examples of Balinese architectural design, expect memorable gateways amidst dated sculptures. Ideally, get there in time for sunset as the view is mesmerizing, as are the Kecek dance performances in the evening.
Kuta Square
If Kuta Night Market did not quite hit the spot for your shopping needs, try Kuta Square. This is where you will find the footwear outlets, the fashion shops, and those lovely cafés to while away the day in. Indeed, some of the best cafés in Kuta can be found here so take your time to explore. You can also take home some gorgeous jewelry to remind yourself of your trip when you arrive back home.
Karma Beach
So named as it is a place where you can find inner peace, Karma Beach is open throughout the day. There is an entry fee of between 700 and 780 INR though that does include a cable car ride as well as food and drink credits. To catch some sun, you should spend at least a few hours taking in the stunning view in front of you and the cliff above. As night draws in, you can spend the remaining time enjoying some socializing and the numerous night parties that may break out.
The Bali Bombing Memorial
Not all of Bali will feature on a postcard to send home as one place is known for tragedy. The Bali Bombing Memorial, also known as the Ground Zero Monument portrays the region’s resistance to terror. It marks the spot when innocent lives were lost to terrorism in 2002 and a visit can be quite moving. Spend your time there to contemplate those who died with a beautiful memorial carved in stone with each victim’s name on a marble plaque.
Summary
While Seminyak features some of the best and most luxurious villas in the area, Kuta is far cheaper. If you are traveling on a budget then you should be able to find somewhere inexpensive to stay. Also, the drinks you can order in bars and the food you can get in Kuta’s restaurants tend to be cheaper too. That’s largely why you will find so many tourists and backpackers in Kuta, rather than Seminyak.
While you can enjoy Kuta Square for some shopping, it is during the nighttime that Kuta really comes alive. That should mean Kuta Night Market for some street food and Karma Beach for a possible night party. You can pack a lot in during the day too, from The Bali Bombing Memorial to Uluwatu Temple. Perhaps try an evening spa treatment too or a leisurely walk on Karma Beach.
