Ofcom's Additional Spectrum to futureproof Wi-Fi Networks

Ofcom is set to make 6GHz spectrum available for UK Wi-Fi networks to ease signal congestion.

Ofcom has taken giant steps to ease signal congestion and boost UK Wi-Fi speeds as demand spike during the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK communications regulator will make 6GHz spectrum available for UK Wi-Fi networks to increase capacity, support data-intensive applications like Virtual Reality (VR) and future-proof consumer and business Wi-Fi services. 

 

As part of the scheme, Ofcom will update the technical requirements for wireless routers in the UK to enhance capacity, boost speeds and lower latency. The service, dubbed as Wi-Fi 6, will become the standard of choice for digitisation and will play a role in converged networks that comprise wireless, cellular and fixed infrastructure. 

 

The entire 6GHz band was cleared by the US Federal Communication Commissions (FCC) earlier this year to aid in the development and adoption of Wi-Fi 6E networks. The Wi-Fi Alliance is expected to open certification for the first devices in early 2021.
