Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is known by its many names including Internet Telephony, IP Telephony, and Internet Calling. In its simplest sense, it is a technology that allows you to make local and international calls using the Internet and devices such as laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets. Due to the many benefits it offers not just to individual users but also to organisations, it has been hailed as the most successful technology of the last decade.
One of the reasons that motivate people to switch from traditional phone system to VoIP technology is the cost. In businesses, VoIP is a way to cut down communication cost as well as add more features to improve interaction and communication between employees and with customers. For individuals, VoIP is a means to communicate through mobile devices and computers for free. One of the services that made VoIP so popular is Skype, which allows people to share instant messages, make voice and video calls, and share data online for free.
Although relatively new, VoIP has already achieved wide acceptance and use. Due to its increasing use worldwide, it is expected that the technology will further improve to address varying needs and demands.
