SIP Client

A SIP client refers to any network device that sends SIP requests and receives SIP responses.

In computing, a client refers to a program that makes a service request from a server. SIP, on the other hand, refers to Session Initiation Protocol that initiates and ends a conversation. Thus, a SIP client is any network device that sends SIP requests and receives SIP responses. IT connects to SIP proxy servers.

 

A SIP client is mainly used for real-time communication. It features softphone functionality and may also have video capabilities, file transfer, chat, and desktop access. Some SIP clients are proprietary but there are also that can be used by average users for free.

 

Three of the most popular SIP clients today are SIPDroid, Bria and 3CX and are currently being used by many business VoIP providers. For clients’ convenience, most SIP clients are now pre-configured to popular VoIP providers. In most cases, clients simply have to click the “add account” button where they can choose their username and password. Paid SIP clients can have more than one account and once set up, they can make free SIP-to-SIP calls. This is very important for various organisations because it saves them money.
